A VACCINE for shingles is being tested by researchers at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Maryland. Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which is also responsible for chickenpox. Symptoms include a rash or blisters accompanied by tingling or shooting pains which can last for years. The disease is more severe among older people, who have a higher chance of developing it. The vaccine was developed by a team led by Norberto Soto and mimics infection by the virus.
