Overfishing isn’t just a modern problem. Prehistoric peoples also decimated local fish stocks. Steve Wing from the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, and colleagues looked at the archaeological remains of fish caught off five Caribbean islands. They found that the average size of the fish fell drastically from 1500 years ago to 1000 years ago, indicating that large fish had been removed from the population.
